You could say Song Camp is the Steely Dan of the internet age. Formed by long-time friends Andy Song and Ryan Camp (who have yet to perform live), they have written and produced an internet album trilogy worthy of a closer look. The albums, I, II, and III, feature a wide-ranging cast of veteran touring and studio pros from across the country. Using the “two rooms” approach of Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Camp writes the lyrics and Song composes the music.

They built a project studio in New York City to record the guitar tracks and hired the other musicians to record their own tracks remotely. Through extensive searches on Google and YouTube, they landed 2-time Grammy Award winning pianist, John Barlow Jarvis; 11-time Dobro Player of the Year Award winner, Rob Ickes; and Robert Plant’s Band of Joy bassist, Byron House. For their venture into hard rock on album III, they reached out to bassist, Bryan Beller (Steve Vai, Mike Keneally) and metal drummer, Marco Minnemann (Adrian Belew).

Song Camp hired 7-time Grammy Award winning producer, Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, Elton John, Frank Zappa) to mix album I. Album II was mixed by Alan Parsons Project singer and head engineer, P.J. Olsson at Parsons’ studio in Santa Barbara, CA.

The trilogy artwork was created by NYC artist, David Welker, known for Phish’s Rift, listed as one of the top ten album covers of all time by Relix magazine in 2007. Unlike their online collaborations, Song and Camp formed a relationship with Welker through a chance meeting in Central Park.

Next up for Song Camp is to release a single every month beginning in early 2012.
